Thai Activity Gift? How About A Historical Walk Through Bangkok?

We’ll start this evening with a walk through Yaowarat, Bangkok’s Chinatown. The Chinese legacy and influence in Bangkok cannot be understated. Early Chinese merchants turned Bangkok into a regional commercial hub, turning the city into one of Asia’s great centers of trade. The last three Thai Prime Ministers are all of Chinese descent! Bangkok now boasts a population of more than one million Chinese and has one of the most colourful Chinatowns on the planet. Fast, frantic and eclectic, a ramble through Yaowarat is a sensory explosion of vibrant colors and intoxicating aromas. Take your time and explore narrow lanes with hidden gems, fresh markets, religious landmarks and textile booths. Enhance the journey by sampling street snacks, all the while gaining an appreciation for the cultural mosaic that is Bangkok. Make no mistake – Thais will brave Bangkok traffic and travel across the city for the perfect bowl of Yaowarat noodles!

From here we’ll continue on to The Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut) for a historical view of the Thonburi side of the river. Here, you can see many temples beautifully illuminated after sunset. Stroll through the Flower and Vegetable Market (Pak Klong Talad), the biggest fresh flower market in Bangkok. The market has all kinds of popular flowers and flora-related items, including roses, forget me nots, orchids, lilies and many more. There are also sections with colorful produce and aromatic spice. yaowarat_gate_copy_1_1

The evening continues in historical style; rewind the clock as we walk through some of the oldest neighborhoods in Bangkok. Stop by Arun Residence for a rest and some refreshments with a spectacular view of Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn), locally known as Wat Chaeng. Wat Arun is one the most striking riverside landmarks in Bangkok. You will find it featured on the 10 baht coin. Despite it’s name, this temple is best viewed at night. We finish the evening at one of the famous market districts or the Bohemian backpacker community of Khaosan Road, depending on your hotel location and interests. Throughout the evening we use a variety of local transportation for maximum efficiency.
